We are so excited to announce that Holly Adomah and Erika Au have joined Kakilang!
Marketing & Audience Development Manager
Holly Adomah
Holly is an arts marketer of Burmese & Ghanaian descent, specialising in campaign delivery to invite audiences to engage in theatre, live performance and art installation. Throughout her career, Holly has championed underrepresented creatives, artists and visionaries by highlighting their culture through marketing and by working with specific communities to invite them to engage in the creative sector.
Holly has led and supported on marketing campaigns for organisations such as New Diorama Theatre, the Bunker Theatre, Brixton House, Bush Theatre, National Theatre Productions, Shakespeare’s Globe, the Royal Court and the British Library. Holly has also shared her insight into arts marketing at the Arts Marketing Association and recently at Performing Arts Forum’s Belfast Gathering.
Holly is also the founder of Holly’s Angels, an voluntary food and donations distribution service which collects items from donors to send across to communities and arts freelancers who may need a helping hand during the festive period.
“I am very excited to start my new role at Kakilang! As someone who identifies as South East Asian, it means a lot for me to work for an organisation which platforms myself and the people and communities within. I am also looking forward to working with new artists and to support them on their artistic journey, but also to identify communities who may feel as if the arts aren’t for them.
I believe that art needs to be accessible to everyone; no matter their circumstances. With that notion, Kakilang and I are in unison in terms of intention and I look forward to welcoming past and new supporters, creatives and those who are looking to engage in high-quality art made by people who are as passionate as myself.”
Marketing and Communications Intern
Erika Au
Whilst completing her Master’s in Cultural Studies at SOAS University of London, Erika will be supporting the team with day-to-day activities, but also will have the chance to explore her creative skills through marketing, producing and fundraising.
Her dissertation is a comparative analysis between Okinawa’s hybrid base culture/economy in the American Village, and cultural conservatism in Los Angeles’ Little Tokyo. Using these two sites as case studies, Erika’s research investigates how nostalgia and belonging are encoded and decoded in aesthetics and the built environment over generations of immigration, trauma, and resistance.
Erika’s family are proud Peranakans from Penang, Malaysia. The Peranakan heritage is a key tenet of her creative, academic, and cultural lines of inquiry. The nuances of nationality, ethnicity, cross-cultural hybridity, and immigration are all integral to Erika’s sense of identity. Through Kakilang, she hopes to meet more people who share a similar cultural identity while also educating people about Peranakan heritage.
As an individual who is constantly in-between cultures, Erika’s desire to join Kakilang was particularly grounding for her. On discovering and getting involved with Kakilang, Erika writes:
“I was initially struck by the name of the organization, as ‘kaki lang’ (our people) is a phrase I grew up hearing regularly from my Penang-Hokkien-speaking family. Instantly, there was a comfort and familiarity with the organization solely because of this. Amidst all the uncertainty in my life between navigating school, adjusting to life in London, and career anxieties, I decided to reach out on a whim.
My gut told me to follow this sense of ‘home’, and in that pursuit I am so happy I found the Kakilang team and that I can learn from them as I plan to start my career in the cultural and creative industry. I am so thankful that I am working in an environment that foregrounds ESEA identities through multidisciplinary artforms, especially one that expands my network through collaboration with many other creatives and organizations.”
Kakilang is delighted to support Erika and other university students who are looking to start their careers.
