The Lonesome Death of Eng Bunker
2023
The Lonesome Death of Eng Bunker is a theatrical work inspired by the historical lives of Eng and Chang Bunker, the conjoined brothers whose experiences were shaped by exhibition, migration and assimilation in 19th-century America. Through a combination of storytelling, puppetry, music and visual design, the production examines themes of identity, displacement and the commodification of difference.
Blending dark humour with evocative stage imagery, the work reflects on the psychological and social impact of objectification, as well as the personal costs of navigating cultural belonging. It invites audiences to consider how historical narratives continue to influence contemporary understandings of representation, visibility and selfhood.
