The Dao of Unrepresentative British Chinese Experience
2024
The Dao of Unrepresentative British Chinese Experience is a gig-theatre production that blends spoken word, live music and performance to explore questions of identity, race and belonging. Drawing on the philosophical concept of Dao—a path or way of living—the work reflects on the complexities of navigating life between cultures.
Through semi-autobiographical storytelling, punk-inspired music and poetic reflection, the performance challenges stereotypes of the “model minority” and examines experiences of racism, difference and self-definition within contemporary Britain. Mixing philosophy, humour and personal narrative, the work invites audiences to consider how identity is shaped by heritage, social expectations and the choices we make along life’s unpredictable paths.
