Citizens of Nowhere?

2019

Citizens of Nowhere? is a site-specific live audio drama exploring British Chinese identity in contemporary Britain. Commissioned for the China Changing Festival at London’s Southbank Centre, the performance unfolds in a public café setting where audiences listen through headphones as actors seated among them carry out an intimate conversation.

The story follows members of the Lo family as they confront questions of belonging, heritage and personal aspiration at a moment shaped by the political tensions surrounding Brexit. Drawing on interviews with members of the British Chinese community and personal experiences, the work examines how migration, cultural identity and family relationships intersect within an increasingly complex social and political landscape.
