On Saturday 22nd April, Emmy The Great’s amazing one off gig at Shoreditch Town hall, marked the end of the Kakilang Festival. What an exciting couple of months, exploring different genres, disciplines, styles, eras and expressions across London and online.

Festival Highlights

We kicked off our Kakilang Festival  with our sell out show - Home X at Barbican Centre. Here’s what the critics think….

Our first ever art exhibition, State-less 無國界 a Two Temple Place & Kakilang Exhibition opened with a packed public programme of curator-led tours, artist talks, family workshops and more. ArtReview wrote a very thoughtful piece about the exhibition, read here.

Curator Ling Tan, of the East and Southeast Asian art collective Kakilang and a trained architect, breaks up the exhibition with a latticework of exposed scaffolding, referencing the ever-changing urban environment of cities in East and Southeast Asia that many of the works address, while also undoing and unsettling the stately grandeur of the site

We also hosted TASTE at The Yard, a stunning celebration of Queer East and Southeast Asian talent, where we partied hard into the early hours with a fabulous line up of performers and DJs.

Not forgetting the digital award-winning every dollar is a soldier / with money you're a dragon made its sold out live debut performed by our very own Artistic Director An-Ting Chang and Associate Artistic Director Daniel York Loh, with Cheng Yu and Wang Xiao in the beautiful atmospheric Two Temple Place that inspired it.

Light Vessel by Hazel Lam and Lucia Palladino danced, entranced and charmed us with PVC tubes and LED lights at Rich Mix.

Selected by The Guardian as one of the best dance in 2022, The Rest of Our Lives by Jo Fong and George Orange did not disappoint and performed 3 fun, engaging and energising performances at Shoreditch Town Hall.

Kakilang Festival closes on an emotional joyous night with Emmy The Great's final show at Shoreditch Town Hall. What a magical evening to mark the end of our Festival.
